In the fast lane: Struber puts Austria's first fully electric washing vehicles on the road

The future of waste disposal is here – and it’s quiet, clean and electric! Struber Entsorgung GmbH is taking a big step towards the future of sustainable waste management with two all-electric eActros 300s with integrated washing systems. The two high-tech vehicles are now on the road every day in Salzburg’s Flachgau and Tennengau regions to collect organic waste and leave bins sparkling clean.

Until now, all road washing vehicles were diesel-powered, with around 20 new models hitting the roads in Austria every year. Now Struber is revolutionizing the industry with the eActros.

A full route on a Monday morning, eight hours on the road – can that work? Absolutely! Initially, there were still doubts in the team, but after the first few weeks on the road, the enthusiasm is huge. No engine noise, full power, strong torque – the washing process is fully automated. Loaders and drivers have no additional work. Scepticism? Not at all! A real win for drivers, loaders and residents.

This is where high-tech meets sustainability: with 300 kWh of battery capacity and a range of up to 130 kilometers, the eActros is a real powerhouse. Added to this is a clever additional package: the Stummer Medium X4 superstructure with a Delta 2322 washing system is operated by an additional 43 kWh battery from BANKE. This means that the full energy of the eActros is retained for driving. The highlight? The system can use both batteries, which guarantees flexibility and smooth operation. In addition, the BANKE package – which, by the way, is not a must, but is particularly useful on particularly long collection tours – serves as an additional energy back-up.

Hygiene is everything in waste disposal. In Austria, almost every organic waste bin is washed after each emptying. This is one reason why the organic waste bin is very popular with the population. This is precisely where Struber is now making a big splash. The fully automatic washing system can clean waste containers from 60 to 1,100 liters in seconds. How does it work? The washing time is freely programmable – a short or long washing cycle between 4 and 8 seconds can be set. In short: customers put their full bins out and get them back empty and sparkling clean. It couldn’t be more practical!

And there is another aspect that makes the quiet, all-electric drive of the eActros so smart: the nerve-wracking stop-start traffic that is part and parcel of daily life in traffic jams is unavoidable when collecting and disposing of waste. Non-stop stop-start driving. A refuse collection vehicle can complete up to 1000 stops in a day – a paradise for electric drives. Thanks to recuperation, a large proportion of the braking energy can be recovered, further increasing efficiency. This is precisely why the eActros is the ideal choice for Struber.

With the eActros, Struber Entsorgung is setting a strong example for the future. Sustainable, quiet, powerful – the new vehicles are an important step towards environmentally friendly waste disposal. And the best thing about them? They show that electric mobility is not only possible, but also makes economic sense. A real win for the environment, the company and local authorities!

Pretty Clever: Test SmartScan and Be Convinced!

STUMMER has recently introduced some exciting demo and rental vehicles: the Medium X4 and Medium X2, both built on MB chassis. Each vehicle is equipped with the innovative AI-based ‘SmartScan’ technology, and here’s the best part: waste disposal companies can test this cutting-edge solution for the recycling industry completely free of charge!

“The main goal in waste management is to boost recycling rates,” explains Johann Streif, Managing Director of STUMMER Kommunalfahrzeuge. “To achieve this, we need not only smart technical systems but also the motivation of citizens to improve their waste separation habits. SmartScan addresses both of these needs, and that’s exactly what we want to demonstrate with our test deployments.”

The demo vehicle, whether it’s a Medium X4 or X2, is available to waste disposal companies at no cost for two days. During this trial period, they can experience the AI technology in their own collection areas. After each use, STUMMER provides a standardized analysis of the current situation, offering valuable insights into separation quality.

Efficiency Through SmartScan Data

The data collected by SmartScan significantly enhances waste separation. It allows for quicker identification of incorrectly sorted residual waste or contaminants in green waste collections, helping to reduce the amount of residual waste and increase recycling rates. This not only cuts costs but also conserves valuable resources.

“SmartScan analyzes the waste composition using optical data right after the loading process in the vehicle,” Streif continues. “This data is then processed through our web-based ScanSuite analysis and information system, combined with GPS and identification data. This enables precise analysis and lays a solid foundation for optimizing collection processes.”

Turning Data into Action

But that’s not all! The data collected also serves as a basis for ongoing and targeted communication with citizens. SmartScan allows for real-time feedback on separation quality, delivered directly on-site at the vehicle. Additionally, the processed data can be used long-term to educate and motivate citizens through regular updates. “Recognizing successes and providing specific tips for improvement help citizens understand their vital role in the circular economy,” emphasizes Streif.

“Ideally, everyone involved works together. Good separation quality benefits waste management companies, local authorities, and citizens alike.” It’s crucial to raise awareness through continuous feedback and to encourage citizen motivation. Incentive systems, perhaps in collaboration with local retailers, could effectively support this initiative.

The first step towards better recycling rates is now easier than ever for waste disposal companies: reserve a demo vehicle, give it a try, and see the benefits for yourself!

SmartScan in use: World-class waste separation at the 2025 Ski World Championships

With the “Circular WM Concept” from Saubermacher and SmartScan technology from SCANTEC, the 2025 Ski World Championships in Austria became a sustainability pioneer.

Thunderous applause in the finish area, around 175,000 ski fans cheered on their heroes in the fight for hundredths of a second and medal places at the Ski World Championships in Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Austria. The FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2025 thrilled the whole world at the beginning of February – and also set new records away from the white pistes and slopes. Never before has an international sporting event implemented environmental protection so consistently.

Saubermacher Dienstleistungs AG, the official waste management partner of the World Championships, was on hand with two eActros 300 waste collection vehicles with STUMMER Medium X4 superstructures, and ensured world-class waste separation with SmartScan technology on board around the slopes.

For two weeks, the rubbish on the fan mile and in the finish stadium was not only collected, but also analyzed using SmartScan. In line with the full event calendar and the resulting streams of visitors, the whisper-quiet collection vehicle with fully electric drive used every time slot to empty the rubbish containers at the World Cup parking lot at the valley entrance and at the bus parking lot at the valley end. As soon as the competition began and the fan mile was deserted again, the approximately 30 recycling islands there were also emptied and the waste was analyzed in real time using a high-resolution RGB camera and AI. The results were exciting: not only were misthrows in the waste recorded, SmartScan was also able to determine exactly what type of material it was.

To raise awareness and further increase the separation rate, the audience was presented with the daily updated waste scan results on a large screen at the finish line. An effective information campaign not only for the separation of waste, but ideally for the complete avoidance of waste.

STUMMER CEO Johann Streif: “Our smart high-tech scanner was in use every day of the World Ski Championships. The analysis of the residual waste showed that, on average, 66 percent of the waste was correctly disposed of by visitors over the entire duration of the event. This is an outstanding figure that significantly exceeds the average recycling rate in Austria.”

In terms of environmental protection, Austria, a country of ski enthusiasts, set a new record with these World Championships. “In addition to top sporting performances, we placed particular emphasis on being a role model in terms of sustainability,” explains Roswitha Stadlober, Chairwoman of the Saalbach 2025 World Championships Presidium and President of the Austrian Ski Association (ÖSV).

The organizers and their local partners had already launched a “Circular World Cup Concept” that goes far beyond traditional waste collection. The 360° approach was able to minimize the environmental impact of the major event by raising awareness, avoiding waste and separating waste, and using the eActros 300 waste collection vehicles with STUMMER Medium X4 superstructures including SmartScan technology.

Cool stuff – Mission Possible

STUMMER refuse collection vehicles are not only used in urban areas – high up in the mountains, the vehicles in the 7.5 to 12-ton class in particular can be found mastering the steepest lanes and wintry slides.

Remote mountain villages and alpine highlands offer breathtaking panoramic views—not just to residents and tourists, but also to those tackling the daily challenges of life in these rugged areas. How is garbage collected up here? Especially when ice and snow make every trip a clambering adventure in winter? Four-wheel-drive vehicles are built for challenging high-altitude conditions. Narrow lanes, steep paths, fresh snow – no problem. STUMMER regular customers have appreciated this for many years and regularly order vehicles that are custom-made for their specific needs.

In winter, the Tyrolean village of Galtür nestled high in the mountains is the last accessible village in the popular Paznaun Valley. The road simply ends beyond Galtür. In summer, the Silvretta High Alpine Road passes through Bieler Spitz and Kresper Spitze, offering plenty of scenic views, before continuing on to Partenen. From the end of October, however, the road is closed to traffic. Galtür has around 200 households and 800 inhabitants. In winter, the number multiplies to a good 4,000 – thanks to ski tourism.

The narrow, steep lanes wind their way through the small village. In winter, slippery ice and heavy snowfall make it even more difficult to reach the houses. In short, it’s a challenge for waste disposal. It is no coincidence that Galtür is the only place in the district where garbage is still picked up directly from households. “A real convenience for the locals,” says Markus Lorenz, head of the Galtür building yard. And that is highly valued by the people of Galtür: Everyone does their part, placing bins outside only in the morning to prevent freezing at temperatures below zero.

Alpine climber in Tyrol: looking forward to the electric motor

About every 20 years, the municipality of Galtür in Tyrol orders a single vehicle from STUMMER. A Mini XL with all-wheel drive, SK351 W+E beam lifter and a volume of eleven cubic meters. Exactly tailored to the needs of the village at 1,584 meters above sea level.

“When the first STUMMER vehicle was put into service in 1988, there weren’t many suppliers that built vehicles of a suitable size,” explains Lorenz. “And with all-wheel drive and snow chains…” Up to 15 times in winter, they would be mounted, after all, the vehicle must be able to clear its own way in snow or fresh snow. The nimble little vehicle is in use throughout the week: recycling on Mondays, plastic on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, residual waste on Thursdays and cardboard on Fridays. “At the moment,” explains Markus Lorenz, “one man can manage that on his own”. There are four of them in total and each can cover for the others. “But if tourism picks up even more, it’s going to be tight.” Lorenz is planning to use an electric motor in the next vehicle. “A tour covers 35 kilometers, and then there are another eleven kilometers to the disposal company or the biogas plant. We were a little worried that the battery power wouldn’t be enough – especially in the cold and for the four-wheel drive. But when the next vehicle is due in 20 years, the technology is sure to have come on a lot…”

Waste collection vehicle from Stummer in use in Zermatt

European premiere at the top in Zermatt!

Even in the world-famous Alpine idyll of Zermatt, at the foot of the majestic Matterhorn, waste disposal is a matter for the experts. The construction of Europe’s highest mountain station at almost 3,900 meters last year has given the municipality a tourism turbo boost. The number of overnight stays has exploded, and Zermatt is already ranked third among Switzerland’s top tourist destinations, after Zurich and Geneva.

Many people, a lot of garbage – the system must also function reliably under alpine and winter conditions. For the first time, the municipality of Zermatt has now put a STUMMER Micro XL superstructure on a fully electric Fuso eCanter 9C18 4×2 into operation. The future-oriented vehicle sets new standards in sustainable waste management and has already generated enthusiasm during the first test drives: from the collection of various waste fractions to the innovative use of data technologies. The fully electric chassis also operates the entire truck body via an on-board power take-off (PTO) and is the first in Europe to be equipped with an interface that complies with EN 1501-1:2021.

Florian Egger from Contena Ochsner AG is impressed by the effective synergies that interact so innovatively on board the new vehicle: “The project is the result of strong collaboration between Daimler Truck Schweiz AG, KOCO Solutions AG and us. A weighing and identification system enables precise and automatic data collection. The KOCOweighing software module ensures efficient data processing, which makes it possible to charge the costs to the party responsible and to achieve maximum transparency throughout the entire disposal process.”

A new, clean wind is blowing through the popular resort of Zermatt, paving the way for the next generation of high-tech refuse collection vehicles in the heart of the Alpine mountains.

Carinthia: The magnificent little one

In Carinthia, a small power pack that our colleagues from KULT34 are particularly looking forward to is about to start work. The brand-new two-axle MINI with beam lifter SK 351 Weighing and detecting STUMMER on a MAN chassis is a specialist and an all-rounder in one.

“Since we also deliver to some communities on the shores of the beautiful Wörthersee, we need a very low vehicle that can pass through the area’s tunnels and underpasses with a clearance height of just 3 meters,” explains Bernd Seefried, managing director of KULT34. But from the shores of Lake Wörthersee, the route also goes right up into the mountains, where extreme inclines and narrow paths are compounded by difficult weather conditions during the winter months. Four-wheel drive is a must here to keep going.

Bernd Seefried: “On the one hand, low-lying, on the other, powerful four-wheel drive always requires a lot of ground clearance… In addition, the vehicle should be as slim as possible to get through our narrow streets – but of course with a large capacity. Only STUMMER with MAN can combine these contradictions for us in Austria.”

Four days a week, the new ‘great little one’ will be on the road in the mountains and valleys of Carinthia. Its job: to collect household and commercial waste, compact paper and cardboard, and collect organic waste. It will start work at the end of March, but Bernd Seefried is already feeling confident and grins as he says, “The Stummer vehicle it is replacing worked tirelessly for 14 years – and it’s aged well, just like us!” But now we’re looking forward to the new one.” It’s clear to see that the whole team has already taken the new ‘little’ member of the family into its heart.

More comfort and safety with the new active footboard

Until now, folding the footboards on refuse collection vehicles was purely manual labor. But STUMMER has come up with a smart solution: the active footboard can now be operated at the touch of a button, significantly reducing the workload for loading personnel.

This innovation not only enhances comfort but also boosts efficiency in day-to-day operations. The footboard can be conveniently folded up from the cab, which is especially helpful when reversing. Plus, it minimizes reversing restrictions and system locks while optimizing the slope angle, leading to less damage from touchdowns.

Good to know: the active footboard is an optional feature and doesn’t replace the manually adjustable footboards, which are still available. This function can be easily retrofitted to waste collection vehicles in the X-Family (X1, X2, and X4) equipped with the ZOELLER Control System and the new DIN EN 1501 standard.
